Don't Let Squirrels Take Up Residence in Your Home
Squirrels are members of the rodent family, with the Eastern Gray Squirrel being the most frequent nuisance. These squirrels measure around 16-18 inches from nose to tail and weigh about a pound. They are active year-round and primarily live in trees.
Gray squirrels can breed throughout the year but spring and fall are the peak times. After approximately six weeks, two to four squirrels are born and raised in a nest for around three months. Squirrels prefer holes in trees but will build a nest out of leaves and twigs high in a tree if needed. They also use buildings as nesting areas.
Once a squirrel finds a small opening in your home, they will chew a wider hole to gain access. They often enter through the attic's gable vent. Then squirrels bring nesting materials into your home and make a good amount of noise as they scurry around. Squirrels often fall down the chimney flue or enter the fireplace, or go down a wall in the attic.
Squirrels pose a fire hazard to your home by bringing in nesting materials and also by chewing on electrical wiring.
All squirrel related damage is not covered by home owners insurance.
